Teachers Research: Practical Life Exercises
The practical life exercises are the springboard or point of departure for all other areas of the child's development. Through these exercises, the child develops self-confidence, concentration, and order.
Each child has the opportunity to repeat the work with the kits as many times as needed while developing independence, refining their motor skills, and improving their control and coordination of movement.

About the Practical Life Category
Within the practical life category, we are excited to introduce a series of pouring activities focusing on both dry and wet elements. For dry elements, we will explore activities like pouring rice, lentils, salt, and popcorn. Additionally, there will be pouring activities involving water, including Pouring Water #1, #2, #3, and #4. These exercises are thoughtfully designed to increase in difficulty progressively.
This category also includes kits for spooning, transferring, and sorting. All kits are attractive to the children and ready to use upon arrival. The pouring exercises, spooning, sorting, and transferring kits are nicely put together. They are attractive to the children and ready to use upon arrival. More importantly, the kits follow the Montessori curriculum, which is based on the child's stages of development and the age and ability of every child individually.
These exercises not only develop but also strengthen a child's will. Each kit prepares a child for life, and each has an activity form that validates the child's progress as he/she continues working on a particular skill, such as control of movement. This form is only an option and can be sent home to communicate to the parents about the child's work for the day or the week.
Polishing Kits
Polishing exercises are part of the practical life of the Montessori method and can help children develop skills like concentration, order, sequence, repetition, and focus. Here are some polishing exercises:
- Wood Polishing
- Mirror Polishing
- Silver Polishing
- Shoe Polishing
Each kit contains only the needed items to complete the exercise. Part of the exercises is an apron, lap towel, polishing mitts, towels for cleaning, brush, sauce dish for polish, non-toxic polish, cotton bowls, and sponge.
Sorting and Grading Exercises
Discrimination of color, size, and shape is the purpose of the sorting exercises. A variation of objects is used for the child to identify, sort, and/or match objects, each with a different level of discrimination and difficulty.
Tongs, hands, and tweezers will be used in these exercises. The purpose of this material is to satisfy the need for repetition and teach the child control of movement. These exercises also aim to lead the child toward independence and silence.
